Fledglings: 2 - 4 Weeks
Many baby birds leave the
nest before they are able to fly. If you see a feathered baby hopping on
the ground, don't be alarmed. The parents are close by and taking
excellent care of their little ones. Because of their vulnerability to
predators, you may want to lend a simple helping hand!
Gently, but firmly pick the baby up and place on a small branch of a
tree or inside a thick shrub in the same area. The parent birds will
continue to feed their young once you leave the area. It is
absolutely untrue that if you touch a baby bird the parents will abandon
it. Keep domestic pets inside and stay away from the area. If the baby is
completely feathered it will be flying in a matter of days. Sometimes a
little inconvenience can save a life!
Parent birds love their babies just as we do ours!
Please do not remove healthy baby birds from their parents
unnecessarily. Use a little logic, common sense and a lot of
imagination.
For cavity nesters, try putting the baby in a birdhouse
hung securely in the area it was found. Just make sure the hole is large
enough for the parents.
-Parent birds will feed and care for their babies as long as they know
where they are! They vocally communicate with their young.
-There are unfortunate circumstances that
will necessitate the removal of a baby bird from it's parent's care. See
